Regardless of what Metrologic handheld barcode scanner you end up getting, they all work in a pretty similar fashion. You plug the scanner in by way of USB, and you’re ready to go. They will scan all common barcode types, and you can install them on Windows machines without needing any drivers. We have to give them a lot of credit in that regard; they really are plug and play devices.
The Metrologic handheld barcode scanners do come in a range of colors, and with some slight differences in sizes. Across the board, we found them to be light, easy to hold and durable enough to be used in commercial settings. We tried to actual bang one up by dropping it on the floor repeatedly, and it still worked fine.
Scanner Functionality
In terms of function, we found that the Metrologic handheld barcode scanner line worked terrifically. We were able to get them up and running almost immediately and they were able to read a wide variety of barcode formats.
One thing we really appreciated was that the line allows you to scan with greater range and width. This isn’t a huge issue if you’re scanning stuff at a counter, but if you’re using these scanners to do inventory control
The only real issue that we had with any of the scanners was that the USB cord wasn’t as long as we might have liked. Whether this is going to be a problem for you and your business is going to depend entirely on what you’re planning on using the scanners for. If it’s just a one location kind of thing, cord length should be fine for almost everyone.
Bluetooth or USB?
Metrologic does make a Bluetooth enabled scanner, though, which is handy for the situations where you’re going to want to use the scanner without being tethered to the computer. It worked fine in our limited tests, although if you have a large enough business it might not have the range you’re looking for.
They also make portable scanners with internal memory that you can use for longer range purposes. The caveat to both these models and the blue tooth equipped one is that they re substantially more expensive than the USB cord attached ones.
Which, actually, brings us to price. The Metrologic handheld barcode scanner line is about average for this kind of equipment, possibly slightly more expensive, but not enough to be, in our opinion, a deal breaker. Click here for latest prices on Amazon
Overall, we found the whole Metrologic handheld bar code scanner line to be excellent, and should be fine for almost all small business use. Just make sure to get the model that best suits your needs, and you should be good to go.
